How to get UNstuck: What to do when you don't know what to do

Feeling stuck is a disheartening and familiar experience for many. The nagging sense of being unable to progress can leave us questioning our choices and potential. In this article, we explore the signs of feeling stuck, explore its underlying causes, and discover practical steps to break free.

Ready? Let’s go.

Am I Stuck?

If you feel, “stuck,” you may identify with one or more of these signs:

  • Lack of Drive: Wanting something but losing the motivation to make it happen (e.g., weight loss or career change)

  • Self-doubt: Talking yourself out of an exciting opportunity due to limiting beliefs or lack of confidence.

  • Overthinking: You create unlimited (negative) scenarios in your mind that suck the joy out of everything you do.

  • Impatience: You are frustrated and get angry at the slightest inconvenience or hurdle.

  • No energy: You feel tired all the time, which leads to inaction, spiralling back to your “stuck” mode.

  • Being too comfortable: Sometimes, being in a comfort zone also keeps you from greater fulfillment.

Why am I Stuck?

Rescuing yourself from crippling lethargy requires digging deep. Why are you feeling like this? Here are some possible reasons:

1. False Expectations

To start, a life driven by false expectations leads to feeling stuck and frustrated. Success based on societal standards doesn't bring true fulfilment unless they align with genuine aspirations and values. In most cases, this mismatch leaves you feeling unfulfilled and dissatisfied.

2. Not Being Self-Aware

Knowing and understanding your innate qualities, gifts, and passions is crucial for making decisions that allow you to harness and maximize them. Without this self-awareness, reaching your potential becomes challenging. Knowing oneself is the foundation for growth and success.

3. Limiting Beliefs

Feeling stuck often arises from work that fails to leverage your inherent strengths. When your job doesn't align with your true self, you'll likely experience dissatisfaction and hinder your ability to reach your fullest potential. Embracing work that showcases your core strengths can lead to greater fulfilment and success.

4. Lack of Support

Moving on, many individuals lack supportive mentors or like-minded peers who have accomplished their desired goals. That’s why your support system matters. For instance, aspiring to run a marathon is impossible when evenings and weekends are spent indulging in beer with coworkers. Surrounding oneself with the right mentors and peers can provide the motivation and guidance needed to break free from these constraints.

5. Toxic Relationships

Finally, some people have the power to drain our energy and leave us feeling stuck as if we've reached a dead end. It's crucial to recognize and navigate such situations with care and awareness.

How to get UNStuck

Enough wallowing! Let’s talk about change:

1. Face the Situation

We all have those moments when life throws us a curveball, and we feel completely stuck. But here's the deal: how you perceive and handle those situations will determine how fast you bounce back.

Reality check: feeling stuck is a universal experience. You're not the first person to face it. And guess what? You won't be the last. Embrace the challenge, and you'll find your way through it.

2. Get Busy

When you're in the thick of a problem, it's natural to feel like staying glued to it. But sometimes, stepping away is essential. Focus on other stuff for a bit, something that brings you joy. Yes, the issue will be right there waiting for you when you return, but you'll be different. You will return with fresh eyes and new perspectives, and the options might feel different.

3. Stop Complaining

Constantly pointing fingers at others for the things that go wrong or don't go as planned can make you feel helpless, but you don't have to be a victim of circumstances. Instead of getting stuck in that blame loop, try taking a good, hard look in the mirror (introspection).

Likewise, practice a little forgiveness, both for yourself and for others. No one is perfect, and that's alright. Embrace the imperfections, learn from the experiences, and use them to grow. That's how you take back the reins and steer your life in the direction you want.

4. Look Inside

“Stuckness” is an ambiguous feeling. To address these emotions, take some time to clarify the desired changes. Reframe aspirations positively, focusing on what you want to achieve rather than what you want to avoid.

Identifying what you can be done through various methods, such as creating a vision board, a creative and personalized visual representation of your aspirations, or determining your values by listing your top 10 values and searching for patterns among them.

5. Don’t Neglect your Body

Finally, moving your body helps you feel good, as exercise triggers the release of chemicals called endorphins, which contribute to feelings of happiness.

Additionally, exercise and meditation create a conducive mental space for your subconscious to process things. Prioritizing sleep is crucial too, as it allows your subconscious brain to continue its work without interference from your conscious mind.

To sum up, to overcome emotional and mental stagnation, begin with self-awareness. And if your emotions persist and hinder your daily life, don’t shy from seeking help from a mental health professional.
